Youth team off to flyer at Nationals

Winnipeg, May 17: Latest results are a second place for Megan Lyons of Nipawin in the junior girls at NDFC Youth Nationals, and joint third for Jaret Gray of Rosetown in the senior boys' event.

Winnipeg, May 16: Team Sask senior boys Jaret Gray and Wade Grassing take first place in the doubles. Alitha Chamney and Janine Grassing finished second in the senior girls' doubles.

Junior girls Megan Lyons and Nicole Allardice came in joint third in their event, while James Walter and Wyatt Hanson missed the junior boys' cut by one spot.

For more details and photos of the team see our Youth page.

Saskatchewan is looking to repeat after last year's equal-first-place Nationals finish. Alitha, Jaret and James are "veterans" of the victorious 2007 team.

Coaching this year are Trish and Hunch Gray; our chaperones are Jim Dennis and Shauna Grassing.

Gambles big in Moose Jaw

Curt Gamble took first place in the men's singles shoot at the Moose Shoot May 3, and in the doubles too, with Jesee Gamble as his partner. In the ladies' it was provincial champ Bonnie Lapierre on top.

Sandra Lamont and Linda Ede won the ladies' doubles.

Orvis and more in Flin Flon

Rory Orvis wins the men's singles and the triples with partners Audrey Campbell and Mike Birdsall and a $350 bonus for a 170 finish at Flin Flon, making it a worthwhile trip for the Kinosota, MB resident.

Campbell struck again in the ladies' singles and she and Sandra Orvis took the ladies' doubles. Local players Perry Burton and Eric Fernandes held off Messrs Orvis and Birdsall to win the men's doubles.

Tournament organizer Brian Humphreys says numbers were down a bit at this year's Flin Flon Open but that was made up for by the quality of darts.

Champs repeat at provincials

Reigning provincial champions Danny McKenzie and Bonnie Lapierre both successfully defended their titles at Saskatoon April 11-13.

Bonnie has won the women's cup 13 times and Danny is six times the men's winner. They'll lead Team Saskatchewan to the Nationals in Winnipeg in June.

It's a different story with the rest of the team, though. Five new faces on the men's side and two rookie women give the 2008 team a whole new look.

Here are your representatives for NDFC Nationals 2008 :

1. Danny McKenzie  Stanley Mission 1. Bonnie Lapierre  Regina
2. Jason Skinner  North Battleford 2. Carol Shepherd  Moose Jaw
3. Phil Roberts  Stanley Mission 3. Georgina Ratt  Stanley Mission

Alt. Randy Boehm  Regina Alt. Tracy Keel  Regina

This year's Zone Cup winners are Moose Jaw zone with a 67.3% average. A close second are Stanley Mission with 66.7%. The rest of the zones finished up as follows: 3. Regina 57.9%, 4. South East 52.0%, 5. Nipawin 49.9%, 6. North East 49.7%, 7. North Battleford 46.1%, 8. West Central 45.2%, 9 Saskatoon 41.1%. Prince Albert zone sent only one player, the Big River dynamo Guy Gilbert, so they don't get a team average this year.

Sixty-five men and 31 women players, representing all ten SDA zones, and including players from the new North East zone from the border town of Flin Flon, Manitoba, all met at Saskatoon for the 2008 provincial championships. That's the most we've had at SDA provincials for some years.

SDA executives re-elected

Four positions on the Saskatchewan Darts Association executive came up for election at provincials this year. Remaining in their seats are Bonnie Bond (Vice-president), re-elected by majority; Bonnie Lapierre (Finance), unopposed; Carol Shepherd (Member-at-large), unopposed; and Trish Gray (Youth), unopposed.

Provincial format to stay

A ballot of the players at provincials was held on the question of bringing in a new format, which was defeated. The 2009 provincials will be a full round robin.

Magic shots

Two amazing 170 outs were recorded at provincials.

Bill Lobb of North Battleford zone, pictured right, and Georgina Ratt of Stanley Mission, far right, each hit the maximum possible finish for the first time.

"What a great feeling," says Georgina (Team Sask '00-'03, '05, '07).

Darticles for sale

Are your rings elliptical? Bristles falling out? If your league, club or pub is in need of new dartboards, wait no longer. The SDA is offering lightly used boards for sale. They're $35 each, picked up in Saskatoon or shipped at cost. Contact the SDA for details.

Skinner, Shepherd finalists at Event

Jason Skinner of Battleford (Team Sask '04, '05, '07) and Carol Shepherd of Moose Jaw (Team Sask '84-'89, '91, '93-'03, '05-'07) both finished second in the singles at the Saskatoon Main Event April 4-5.

Their runs ended when they met Rikk Arnott and Cindy Der of Alberta in the finals.

Despite a strong showing by SDA players, top spots in all events still went to out-of-province players. Arnott featured again in the doubles, winning it with partner Fred Seaward. Linda Ledingham and Barb Lazaruk of Alberta took women's doubles, and the mixed doubles title goes to Manitoba pair Gerry Convery and Angie Wark. Full results here.

Rosetown roundup

At the Spring Shoot March 22, Jason Skinner of Battleford struck again with wins in singles and doubles partnered with Moff Kay. In the ladies it was Carol Shepherd doing the double, winning singles and doubles alongside local player Gloria Morrison. See the full results

Skinner sweeps, Bonnie doubles

Battleford's Jason Skinner made it three for three at the Prince Albert Northern Classic March 15-16, with wins in singles, doubles and mixed triples. Jason, pictured left, was partnered with Moff Kay and Dorothy Zimmer.

Provincial champ Bonnie Lapierre, pictured right, scored twice, once in the ladies' singles and again in ladies' doubles, where she shared the honours with Laurie Kitzul of Saskatoon. See the full results

Talking scents

You may have noticed that some tournaments are mentioning the use of fragrances in their posters.

Well, the SDA recently adopted a health and wellness guideline that is commonly used in business and government buildings as well as many activities and sports. They want to remind players that excessive scent can be offensive and even cause allergic reactions in some people, and that players using scent should keep it to a minimum.

The SDA is encouraging individual tournaments to raise awareness of this issue. For example, this year's Blizzard was advertised as fragrance free.

Part for sale

The SDA is taking offers on a tailgate lift for a one-ton cube van or truck. It's an Eagle in great used condition. Located in Rosetown at present, but transport can be arranged. See posting on a classified site.
